1984 ALFA ROMEO ALFETTA GTV6 for sale

Price: $49,995
We are delighted to have on offer a fine example of an Alfetta GTV6 which has been the subject of a 2-year restoration with little use since its completion. Its an Australian RHD car in its original delivery colour and a superb driving car.
First seen in 1972, Giorgetto Giugiaros striking Alfetta fastback wedge design directly resulted from the opposing design requirements of delivering a car capable of carrying four people with luggage, modern looks and dynamic sports handling. It was required to replace the hugely successful 105 series cars which was a tough act to follow. The final design with its stunning looks is as beautiful today as it was some fifty years ago and its capability as a drivers car has become legendary.
Alfetta "little Alfa" in Italian, derived its name from the nickname of the 1951 Formula one, Tipo 159 Alfetta which also paired a transaxle layout to De Dion tube rear suspension.
The rear de Dion transaxle (clutch and transmission) provided the new Alfetta with excellent weight distribution and lower centre of gravity, with these handling advantages widely acknowledged. Overall, it was a sophisticated and progressive set-up and one that delivered outstanding results when the Alfetta went into competition. During its life, it won events and championships across the globe both on track and in rally guise. They continue to successfully compete to this today in classic race events.
When launched the Alfetta GT was powered by the 1.8 litre version of the Alfa DOHC four (taken from the previous 105 series cars). In 1976 this was discontinued in favour of 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre options. Over the subsequent years a number of updates were made to both engines and the appearance of the cars.
In late 1980 Alfa Romeo coupled the cars excellent handling with its legendary V6 Busso engine and the GTV 6 2.5 was born. The bonnet received a bulge to clear the top of the intake and became a defining feature. With Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection replacing carbs, the V6 was easier to start and retain its state of tune. The V6 received rave reviews and it found its true home in the GTV 6's striking body where it could demonstrate its ample capabilities underlined with its race successes. The GTV6 cemented its position as an Alfa Romeo legend and its affection within the Alfa Romeo community is enduring.
Our car; chassis 3003760.
As confirmed by its Certificate of Origin our car was produced in December 1984 and delivered new to NSW in December 1985 in light grey metallic paint with its classic grey pinstripe interior. This is how the car presents today.
These cars are rare, and most are tired and have lacked attention. By contrast, the most recent owner has lavished much attention and investment to make this car an excellent example and well sorted driving car.
After purchase he had the car stripped to bare metal for paint. It was found to be in remarkably good condition with only new metal required in the front lower guards and one small area to the boot lid. The paint presents really well, and we think the original silver suits this car perfectly. The original plastic bumpers have also been painted in a darker metallic grey and whilst not original do enhance the overall presentation of the car providing a feeling of quality.

As with many GTV6 cars, it has had an engine upgrade and now runs with a 3.0L motor from an Alfa Romeo 164. We believe this was done around 14 years ago and correspondence confirms it was done by a known specialist. Under current ownership and as part of the restoration mechanical work has been thorough and extensive including renovation or replacement of all key ancillary parts such as timing belt, leads, water pump, alternator, hoses and so on. A recent compression test shows excellent results. Other items attended to included (but not limited to) new brake pads and rotors, wheel bearings, new bushes, reconditioned steering rack, wheel bearings and master cylinders, all of which add up to make the car an excellent driving example.

The original interior was in excellent presentation; however, the dash was restored, and an original unused steering wheel sourced at great cost. The front seats show some signs of fading, but this is being picky. They are incredibly comfortable to sit in, and the net head rests are a particularly appealing feature. The compressor for the air-conditioning was removed when the new engine was installed however this could be put back in if required. The sunroof works as it should and the original headlining is in very good order. Overall, the interior is a lovely place to be.

The instruments are fresh without any hint of age and all the electrical items work as it should. Even the clock keeps perfect time!

The engine bay and Busso V6 is a visual treat with some detailing being done including hydro blasting the plenum chamber and cam covers.

The wheels have been refurbished and present as new with fresh rubber, this includes the spare wheel too. The boot is as expected is excellent and the boot floor and wheel well are excellent. The underside of the car is clean and in fine order.

Turn the key and the car starts with a familiar Alfa Romeo growl. Blip the throttle and the V6 provides its familiar appealing tone. Out on the open road this car is exceptional.

The engine with its increase in capacity to 3.0 litres provides a useful lift in torque and power. This really does translate when you experience this car. Not only does it pull well below 3,000 rpm but after about 4,000 the car really does come alive and the tone of the V6 really is magical. It just pulls and pulls with a spine-tingling soundtrack.

Ordinarily the gearboxes on GTVs can be a little vague, however with this example it is precise and easy to work very quickly through the gears in complete confidence. Likewise, the brakes and steering are incredibly good, inspiring confidence when you want to push on. And in this car, you will want to do exactly that. Its a marvel to drive and will not fail to put a smile on your dial.

Accompanying the car is a thick folder of invoices and work done totalling over $35,000. We are informed that were many more invoices and value for time spent were simply not kept.
It is registered in NSW on club plates and was recently driven by a known specialist mechanic and given a clean bill of health. It is now ready to be enjoyed by its next owner.
This is one well sorted car and given the recent investment made represents good buying.
